Bringing innovation in intermodal freight planning

Client Situation

Planning freight intermodal services requires unique expertise and significant information management capabilities. Members of our team have contributed significantly in opening the planning process to systematic users of such services in Europe, and in developing optimal plans with respect to multiple objectives. The latter included cost, door-to-door transport time, risk, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Approach

Our approach in developing tools and processes for planning efficient intermodal freight transport comprised the following activities:

  • Detailed mapping of the existing freight forwarding and freight transport market and services
  • Detailed mapping of the requirements of major users of these services, especially into leveraging intermodal opportunities as a strategic advantage
  • Survey of existing planning processes, tools, and technology, and gap assessment with respect to the requirements of our clients
  • Design of novel services and processes to address the above gaps. Implementation in advanced applications
  • Thorough testing and evaluation with respect to existing practices.
Outcome

We contributed in the development of a suite of innovative applications and services to support advanced intermodal freight planning. Significant benefits include the opening of the process to key users, cost savings in the order of 20%, and savings in the door-to-door transport time in the order of 25%. In addition, risk factors and greenhouse gas emissions are embedded fully in the process of selecting the most effective plan.
